EDMONTON
- April 24, 2009The Edmonton Energy showed plenty of it in their first and only pre-season game of the 2009 International Basketball League season.
Playing against a select team of university and college players, the Energy recorded a 105-80 victory before a small crowd, including national coach Leo Rautins, at the McNallyHigh School gym.
"It was a good night," said Energy coach Paul Sir, whose team leaves Thursday for their first two league games in Los Angeles during the weekend.
Returning pivot Lee Scruggs and new point guard William Funn were among the biggest producers.
"I like to go outside and shoot threes," said 6-foot-11 Scruggs after sinking four in a row at one point.
Funn was equally pleased. "I had a good time," he smiled. "This team will get some things done before long."
Former Golden Bears Robbie Valpreda, Jeff Stork and Joel Allen had good moments for the Selects, who added Harry Ainlay Titans high school star Jordan Baker to fill out the roster.
Baker’s performance was particularly impressive to Rautins. "He’s young but he has lots of ability; we want to see a lot of this man," said the national coach, already preparing for a World Championship qualifying tournament in Mexico in July and August.
After the game, Sir offered a roster spot to walk-on guard William Broadus, but the speedy prospect returned to his home near Honolulu for the birth of a child. His status will be reviewed later, Sir said.
