Former NBA players spoilers in Energy’s first game of the IBL season

LOS ANGELES -- Three former NBA players spoiled the International Basketball League debut of the Edmonton Energy.

The Energy, who were constructed from the ashes of last year’s failed Edmonton Chill, opened an 18-point lead in the first half before Lamont Murray, Byron Russell and Fred Vinson launched a comeback that gave the Los Angeles Lightning a 108-102 victory on Saturday night.

Murray wound up with 26 points while Fred Vinson and Russell - a long-time regular with the Utah Jazz - added 16 apiece.

Tops for the Energy was power forward Skousen Harker with 17 points. Former Ross Sheppard Thunderbirds high school star Steve Sir added 15, while Michael Tabb had 14.

Also in double figures were Michael Tabb with 14 points, and Kevin Shand and Lee Scruggs with 10 apiece.

Scruggs, 6-foot-11 veteran who shone at Georgetown University before turning pro, led all re-bounders with 13.

Point guard William Funn distributed the ball as well as advertised, collecting seven of Edmonton’s total of 17 assists.

The Lightning shot 36 free throws, compared to only 22 for Edmonton.
